1. Breakfast

Start off the day on either a sweet or a savory note. Since you may indulge in some sweet treats through the day, might be best to have some protein in your tummy first! We like to grab breakfast inside Downtown Disney District and eat while we wait for rope drop. There are hearty (and low-priced) breakfast sandwiches at either Earl of Sandwich or La Brea Bakery. Or sip and go with a fruit smoothie from Jamba Juice.

Inside the parks if you’re prefer a leisurely breakfast with your sweetie-pie, you can dine on Mickey waffles, eggs, bacon and fruit at Carnation Cafe and watch the crowds rushing by. And if you want to start the day with something sweet, swing into Jolly Holly Bakery and Cafe for a cinnamon roll or muffin.

2. A Fresh Bouquet

If you’re staying at a Disneyland Resort Hotel, consider a call to Disney Floral & Gift for the delivery of a magical floral arrangement. They can also go all out with romantic in-room decor like rose petals on the bed, spa robes and chocolate covered strawberries! If you’re celebrating the love with the whole family, they even have collections that include something for everyone, like red roses for Mom and sweet treats for the kids.

3. A Sweet Souvenir

Keep your eyes open for adorable love-inspired souvenirs in the Disneyland shops, including this Mickey & Minnie boutique lace-trimmed bag!

If you like to purchase your souvenirs online and have them arrive to you at home, shop the Disney Store online. They have dozens of precious Valentine’s Day themed items that will delight everyone.

4. Sweet Sips and Snacks

Enjoy a classic afternoon tea at Steakhouse 55 inside the Disneyland Hotel. As a special treat for Valentine’s (available Feb. 3-5, 10-12 and Feb. 14), the Classic Afternoon Tea will feature Shanghai Rose black tea, specialty tea sandwiches, a chocolate raspberry scone with vanilla glaze, chocolate cupcakes with ganache, pink velvet cupcakes with champagne mousse, a chocolate ganache cupcake, chocolate-dipped strawberries and a heart-shaped macaron.

7. Dinner for Two

Perhaps your Valentine’s Day at Disney will be spent with just the two of you? A romantic dinner is in order then and Disneyland has some special meals planned.

On Valentine’s Day The Blue Bayou will feature a special menu item: Lobster A L’Americaine, a rich blend of lobster sauce, roasted lobster tail, snow crab, sautéed mahi and potatoes in a creamy lobster-cognac sauce with onions, celery and peas.

If you’re looking for an amazing splurge the ultra upscale Napa Rose inside Disney’s Grand Californian has a 4-course meal that includes a wine flight. Be sure to book your Advance Dining Reservations early for these meals!

8. Watch the Sunset

Finding a lovely spot to watch the setting sun at the Disney resort is a perfect way to close out the day. The sun will set behind Mickey’s Fun Wheel so catch a ride on this Ferris wheel for a panoramic view. Or grab a drink at Wine Country Trattoria and take a seat on the steps in Paradise Park (located in front of the Little Mermaid ride, where World of Color is shown). Or dine on the patio at Carthay Circle for a view over the crowds.

9. Dinner for the Family

Several other Disney restaurant locations will be offering Valentine’s Day dinners that are inclusive of the entire family. Carnation Cafe will be serving up Surf & Turf featuring sirloin steak, shrimp skewer, mashed potatoes, sautéed broccoli, sun-dried tomato butter and herb beurre blanc sauce.

The Disneyland Resort hotels will also be offering special dinners. On February 14th, Storytellers Cafe a prix-fixe, three-course meal will be available, featuring farmer’s market field greens, New York strip loin and lobster tail with sun-dried tomato risotto and asparagus, vanilla crème brûlée with berry compote. At Goofy’s Kitchen, Valentine’s Day-themed desserts will be available on the buffet.

Sweet, Quick and Easy Applique Valentine’s Day Heart Tee

Sweet, Quick and Easy Applique Valentine's Day Heart Tee

Need something sweet for the kids to wear on Valentine’s Day? This easy applique Valentine’s Day heart tee goes together quickly with fabric scraps and is easy enough for the beginning seamstress. I’ll even show you how to make this tee with a “Disney-twist”! Oh so special to wear on your next Disney vacation to show your Mickey-Love! I’ve included a free printable applique for the hearts and silhouette.

Welcome to this month’s Blogorail Yellow Loop. Today we are sharing some fun Valentine’s Day crafts.

I’ll confess…Though I have an Etsy shop and take frequent orders that get shipped out quickly, I tend to wait until the last minute to make outfits for my own kids. I love having a quick and easy method of design that takes minimal time and can be put together in the matter of an hour or so. You’ll love this layered method of applique because it goes together fast, requires no special stitches and no hemming…and it’s totally unique. You decide the look based on the colors and the fabric mix you choose.

Sweet, Quick and Easy Applique Valentine's Day Heart Tee

You’ll need:

  • T-shirt. This is a chance for you to use a tee that might have a stain on it as you’ll be able to “save” the shirt by placing an applique over the stain.
  • Applique pattern. I used hearts in various sizes as well as a small Mickey silhouette. You can use the PDF applique here: Heart Tee Applique
  • Scrap fabrics in various sizes and colors (choose cotton or cotton knit)
  • Sharpie Fine Point Marker
  • Fusible bond, like Heat’n Bond Lite Iron-on Adhesive
  • Thread in matching colors. Gutermann thread is my favorite brand as it’s strong (doesn’t break mid-project!), wide range of colors and holds up to wash and wear.
  • Bobbin thread in color to match the shirt
  • Sewing machine needle (jersey or Ballpoint Machine Needles give the best results for applique)
  • Disappearing ink pen, like this one from Dritz
  • Iron

HeartTeeCollage-1

1. Place a piece of fusible bond (bumpy side down) onto your design and trace out each individual shape using a Sharpie marker (ball point pens or pencils will smudge or smear off onto your iron, so a Sharpie is best).

HeartTee-5

2. Cut out and set aside the Mickey silhouette.

HeartTeeCollage-2

3. Choose your fabrics and iron out the wrinkles on each piece.

HeartTee-6

Pull out the fabric that you want to use for the largest heart. Keep in mind that only the outer edge of this heart will show. Iron the fusible bond heart (bumpy side down) onto the WRONG side of the fabric.

HeartTee-7

4. Cut out only the largest heart on the Sharpie line.

HeartTeeCollage-3

5. Peel off the fusible bond backing. Save the backside of the fusible bond to use for the next heart.

HeartTee-9

Lay your shirt down and iron out any wrinkles in the design area. Lay the large heart down on the tee, make sure the design is centered and straight. Iron on securely.

6. Using a straight stitch, sew with a small hem (1/4″) around the edge of the fabric, securing the first heart to the tee.

HeartTee10

7. Using the heart template (leftover from the backside of the fusible bond), carefully cut away to the next size heart. Lay down onto the wrong side of the next piece of fabric and use your disappearing ink pen to trace this outline onto the wrong side of the fabric.

HeartTeeCollage-4

8. Cut out heart shape from fabric and lay down, centering on top of the first heart that was ironed onto the shirt. Carefully pin to the shirt, smoothing out fabric so there aren’t any bumps. Carefully sew with a small hem (1/4″) around the edge of the fabric, securing the second heart to the tee.

HeartTee-12b

9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 with the third heart.

HeartTee-12a

HeartTee-13

10. Iron the Mickey silhouette onto the WRONG side of the fabric. Cut out the shape on the line, peel off backside of fusible bond and center the design in the middle of the third heart. Iron on securely.

HeartTee-15

11. Using a straight stitch, sew with a small hem (1/4″) around the edge of the fabric, securing the silhouette to the tee.

Sweet, Quick and Easy Applique Valentine's Day Heart Tee

Straight stitch applique advice:

Because the edges of the applique pieces are not covered, the edges of your cotton fabric may fray or curl slightly after a wash and dry. As long as you’ve properly stitched the pieces securely, slight fraying or curling should be fine and create a fun look to your design.

Taking applique to the next level:

Once your practiced straight stitch applique, try using a satin stitch (aka: a very close together zig-zag) around the edges of your applique pieces to secure them. This will create a more smooth and polished look. You’ll be able to add more detail and the look will last a long time. Cover the stitches inside (because they will be thicker and potentially more itchy to the wearer) with a soft fusible Poly-mesh backing.

5 Cheap Ideas for Valentine’s Day that Still Respect Your Budget in the Morning!

Need a Few Cheap Ideas for Valentine's Day? Here are 5 special ways to tell someone you love them on Valentine's Day without spending a bunch of money!

I’ll pass on the pricey red roses. Please don’t spend a fortune on teddy bears, chocolate and diamonds, either. Not to say I don’t love those things or wouldn’t appreciate them, but in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day the prices on them just seems to skyrocket. I want to have a sweet Valentine’s Day but I don’t want to spend a bunch of money either! If you’re trying to budget you’ll need cheap ideas for Valentine’s Day so keep reading.

5 Ideas for Valentine’s Day that Still Respect Your Budget in the Morning!  5 Ideas for Valentine’s Day that Still Respect Your Budget in the Morning!

Need a Few Cheap Ideas for Valentine’s Day?

No need to break the budget just to do something special. These try these cheap ideas for Valentine’s Day or save them for any day when you just want to show some love! Some of these are family appropriate and others are just for you and your honey.

Bacon for Breakfast

Okay it doesn’t have to be bacon but just adding one special treat to your day will make everyone happy. For us, it’s adding bacon for breakfast. Just the scent of that bacon baking in the oven gets us all giddy! It’s a rare treat.

Perhaps your something-special is dessert? My kids loved when I baked these over-sized sugar cookies and decorated them with their names on the top! What is one special thing that you don’t have or do very often that fills your family with joy? Do that thing on Valentine’s Day!

Love Notes & Decorations

We all toss around “I Love You” but how often do we write down our thoughts and feelings? Store-bought cards are so expensive! Make a simple card with scrapbook paper and write something sweet inside…it’s the sentiment that counts.

I crafted some out of simple black construction paper and a white Sharpie to give it a “chalkboard” effect. I’m going to gift them to my family at dinner…along with a small box of chocolates to share for dessert.

Another cheap way of making Valentine’s Day special is with sweet decor. I made this chain of paper hearts and was able to store it away and reuse it for years. I hand painted the wooden picture frames myself with acrylic paint for just a few dollars.

Special Dinner…at Home

We eat dinner at home nearly every night so eating at home on Valentine’s Day certainly wouldn’t be anything special. However for Valentine’s Day I plan to serve something out of the ordinary as a treat.

Buying steaks or seafood at the grocery and preparing them at home is going to cost at least 50% less than if you went out, especially if you want to have a glass of wine with dinner. Add a little romance with a pretty table setting and candles. Leave the dishes for tomorrow!

Movie Night…on the Sofa

Save yourself a bunch by renting a Redbox or streaming on Netflix for a fraction of the cost of watching in a theater. We buy a big bag of popcorn from Costco, bake some cupcakes for dessert and have a movie marathon after the kids are in bed. Best part? We can watch in our jammies! Even better if you can get the kids to spend the night somewhere else so you’ll have the house to yourself *wink*

Pick a “new-to-you” movie or a classic you’ve seen already 23 times. I’m in love with Jane Austin movies, so I could watch Pride & Prejudice with Keira Knightly over and over but I’m not sure my husband would be able to stay awake past the opening scene! Best to choose something you’ll both enjoy.

Cuddle Up

Grab a big blanket and curl up together on the sofa. Pull out a photo album or scrapbook to reminisce over. It’s one of our favorite past times. Recall your thoughts about when you first met or your wedding day. Kids love hearing those stories too. Or just sit in the dark and talk after the kids have gone to bed, while you snuggle and smooch!

Hope you have a wonderfully happy Valentine’s Day!
