Pirate’s Dinner Adventure in Buena Park

Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is located in Buena Park, a city in Los Angeles/Orange County. It’s just a few blocks from Knott’s Berry Farm and about 15-minutes drive from Disneyland. My family (including my husband, toddler, six-year old and two teenagers) visited Pirate’s Dinner Adventure for the first time.

For more ideas on what to do in the Buena Park and Southern California area, be sure to check out my post.

Many guests were dressed in pirate garb, which is encouraged for young and old alike. My son brought his pirate hat and we saw many guests wearing bandanas and carrying light-up pirate swords. There are, of course, plenty of costuming accessories for sale in the souvenir shops inside the lobby. The lobby is appropriately decorated with a giant pirate’s map and skeletons.

Purchasing Tickets for the Event

When I was at the ticket window getting our tickets there was a family of 7 next to me trying to get seats for that night. Unfortunately the show had sold out, which I understand is fairly regular. Don’t expect to just show up and try to purchase tickets, it’s best to buy ahead of time. Tickets can be found on the website or through Groupon (for select nights only). Sign up through Ebates first, then click Groupon to purchase – you’ll receive an additional 9% cash back! Even with your Groupon ticket, you’ll still need to call ahead of time to book your reservation.

Pre-Show Entertainment & Appetizers

Before entering the theater you’ll have your group photo taken. Printed pictures will be brought to you tableside during the show. You can purchase them, or not. It was recommended that we arrive 60 minutes before the show. This allowed plenty of time for purchasing a drink at the bar, souvenir shopping, taking in the pirate decor and a restroom break. There is the opportunity to have your child’s face painted for an additional charge. Unless you’re planning on shopping, I don’t think you need to get there quite that early. We did a lot of standing around, waiting for the doors to open. Actually we have a toddler, so technically that just meant we took turns chasing her through the crowds!

Pirate's Dinner Adventure in Buena Park is a combination of live theater, 3-course meal and swashbuckling entertainment. Read my honest review on who should go, what the food is like and what to expect during the show. #VisitBuenaPark

As far as the pre-show appetizers, they are tray-passed through the lobby. We saw meatballs on toast, ham and cheese open-faced sandwiches, and carrots and celery with ranch dressing. Not too special, I’d wait to eat and save room for the hearty dinner instead. However you can purchase both alcoholic and non-alcoholic specialty drinks in the lobby, then bring them into the theater.

There is a pre-show in the bar area which introduced the pirates. We were in the entryway room but were able to watch on a television. Each pirate walks through the lobby, carrying a colored flag and leading guests that are seated in his colored section. We waited until the orange pirate came through and then followed him with the rest of our group into the theater!

Seating Inside Pirate’s Dinner Adventure

If you choose a seat in the upper part of the theater, know that you won’t be allowed much elbow room. Guests were squeezed in pretty tight in those last few rows. Also, there are some seats that don’t have very good views of the action. In fact some spots have obstructed views with all the pirate ship rigging and poles in the way.

I recommend opting for a seating upgrade that allows for more space and an unobstructed and closer view of the action. My family and I were seated in the second row of the orange section, which offered us a perfect view of the stage.

Food Review

The Pirate’s Dinner Adventure includes a three-course meal. Non-alcoholic drinks like soda, water, lemonade, coffee and tea are included. You can also request a vegetarian. gluten-free or vegan meal in place of the traditional dishes. Children will receive the kid’s platter, which includes small portions of mashed potatoes, macaroni & cheese, and cubed melon alongside a generous amount of chicken nuggets.

Soup or Salad – Guests have their choice of either a large dinner salad or a small bowl of vegetable soup. I ordered the salad, which was large for a dinner salad. It was already covered with ranch dressing, which was fine, except that the server never asked me what kind of dressing I wanted (and I usually request dressing on the side). My older two kids ordered soup.

Main Course – Roasted quarter chicken leg and thigh. The meat was moist and flavorful. There was a veggie and shrimp skewer, which was also tasty. Carrots and zucchini are served on the side (zucchini was slightly under cooked, which was better than being overcooked in my opinion). Creamy mashed potatoes rounded out the plate. Our server did bring a platter with more chicken to see if anyone wanted another piece (my husband did).

Dessert – A slice of tres leches cake that is drizzled with chocolate. Usually not my favorite dessert but this was delicious!

Overall the food is good and our platters were served hot. Note that your entire party may not be served at once (my older kids didn’t get their plates until about 5 minutes after their dad and me). There are additional upgrades that can be made to your meal, including adding lobster and champagne or three-layer chocolate cake.

Service

Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is a loud and boisterous place. This means it can be a challenge to get messages to the server. We were seated at a long bench table and if you’re seated in the middle, you won’t really be able to speak to your server directly without yelling! I had to “talk” to the server by telling my husband and having him pass the message to the server. Meal plates are passed from the ends to the guests in the middle of the table. Not every seat is like that in the theater, but having the bench seats without server access made it difficult.

We received beverages at the beginning of the show but they were never refilled. Guests are encouraged to “Drink! Drink!” at times during the show and my 6-year old said to me with his stein turned upside down, “I can’t drink, my cup is empty!”

Audience Participation

Throughout the show, the audience is encouraged to participate. Each colored seating section is assigned their own pirate. We sat in the orange section and cheered on our themed pirate throughout the show. Shouting, standing, banging your cup and cheering is all encouraged! My husband was given the job of raising our orange flag. Some children were invited to the stage to ride in one of the row boats. Other guests were included in the show as well. It’s a boisterous place and that adds to the fun!

The Show – Legend of the Loch Ness Monster

This action-packed show takes place on what looks like a Spanish galleon. The ship is surrounded by 200,000 gallons of water on which row boats float. The “stage” is impressive for sure, and the colorful lighting and dramatic music adds to the effect. Did I mention the shirtless pirates? These singing, dancing and sword fighting pirates swing from ropes, leap on trampolines and duel each other throughout the show. Each pirate has their own personality and allows for plenty of comic relief in between the drama.

There is also a comedic “pirate in training”, a headstrong princess, an acrobatic gypsy girl, a teensy-bit of romance and lots of one-on-one pirate battles. The stunts are all great quality. The swinging ladder was my favorite part (I held my breath the entire time!) Don’t bother trying to figure out the story plot in between eating. Just watch and enjoy (ahem, shirtless pirates!)

Can You Take a Baby or a Toddler?

We mentioned on the reservation that we would have a toddler with us. I asked initially if there were high chairs and was assured that there were. However our seats were in the second row, which was all bench seating with one long table. There wasn’t any way to get a high chair there for our toddler. I asked our server for a booster seat, but it was never brought.

The seat and table were too far away from each other for my petite toddler to sit at (she is just a few weeks shy of her second birthday). My husband and I ended up taking turns holding her on our laps so that she could reach the table to eat. She watched most of the show but started to get bored towards the end (naturally, after the cake was served!) I took her out into the lobby to run around until the show was over.

Trying to hold a squirmy toddler while watching the show.

What Age Is Most Appropriate?

We attended Pirate’s Dinner Adventure with our almost-2 year old daughter, 6 year old son and two 14 year olds (boy and girl). I already shared about my toddler in the section above. There are some loud moments (like thunder sounds or cracking whips) that might startle young children. The show is appropriate for all ages but at 2 hours, it might be too long for some children. My older three kids were highly entertained. They all liked the food and enjoyed the action. My 6 year old lamented that he wished he’d been chosen to go onto the stage! There is one scene at the end that frightened my son and he hid under the table (I promise, it’s not that scary!) My teenagers both liked the show though my jaded older son said it was a “little corny”, but I don’t think that was a bad thing.

Who Will Enjoy Pirate’s Dinner Adventure?

If you’re looking for a high-brow, elegant dinner, this is not the place for you. If you like to relax, enjoy live entertainment and can get into the fun atmosphere, Pirate’s Dinner Adventure is a great family place! You can read my review of Medieval Times (which is literally a block away from Pirate’s Dinner Adventure) so you can compare the two and see which is the better choice for your family.

Create a More Calm and Peaceful Entryway in Your Home

In the last few months, I’ve been focusing on being in a more intentional place. FOCUS is my Word of the Year and I really am trying to press into that. I want to be a more focused mother for my children. A wife who has a great focus on marriage as a whole. And I’ve just started going to night school, so I definitely want to be more focused on my studies. All this focus can leave other things, like housework, in the dust (literally!) There’s only so much of me to go around, you know? Staying focused on a few things means that other things can get neglected. And to be honest, that truly affects my mood. I want to be good at everything, even when I know that’s impossible! But if I neglect ME, then nothing else is going to go right.

My DIY entry way tutorial helps to put me in the right mood the moment I walk inside the front door. Find out what to use, including fragrance, to add joy into your every day. #GladeFineFragranceMist #ad

Saying Yes to More Peace

My moms group has been delving into the topic of getting more peace in our lives. Bottom line: It’s not your circumstances that bring you down. It’s the attitude and thinking you have about things that ultimately makes you upset. My happiness should not be based upon what is happening around me. It’s not the circumstances, it’s the attitude and thinking I have about them.

I have it on my heart to be more conscious about my mood when I come home after a long day. It’s too easy to fall into the chaos once inside the door and I aim to be more centered and at peace at home. A relaxed and calm Mom is better at all things!

One thing that I do as a reminder to stay serene is take a moment in my entryway to pause. It’s only a moment that I need before the whirlwind hits me. I have my entryway table set up with everything I need for a proper welcome home. I can choose to think about positives I’m grateful for and not the potential craziness that awaits me beyond the entryway. With just a few key items in this place, I’ve made my home a more calm place.

Creating a Calm and Peaceful Entryway

Creating a peaceful and beautiful entryway helps set up the reminders for me about being purposeful. I have carefully chosen only what makes me happy and gives meaning. Clutter is the enemy! Only what absolutely needs to be there should be allowed in this place. I take time each day to make sure this area is tidy. Even if my office desk has a huge stack of papers or there are dirty dishes in the kitchen sink, at least I know that this one sacred place of peace and meditation is clutter-free.

These are the things I have in my lovely entryway that bring me joy –

Favorite art and calming quotes. Surrounding yourself with lovely things really does go a long way towards calm.

A table runner is a great base to start from. I went with a neutral so that I could choose to add more color with my accessories.

A place to put car keys because hunting for lost car keys when you’re already running late is going to make you crazy. I love this pretty bowl to use as a catch-all from keys to earrings.

I try to deal with mail immediately while it’s in my hand. I sort out the junk into the recycling and put bills on my office desk. Don’t let paper clutter up your special space.

Add a touch of nature, whether it be a vase with flowers, a tiny cactus or something like this bonsai I have. An earthy reminder can help you to stay grounded.

Include something meaningful to you. I have a pretty vintage cake plate and a soapstone container that my husband bought me on our first vacation together.

Using Fragrance to Move My Mood

The Glade® Atmosphere Collection™ Fine Fragrance Mist helps welcome me home. The scent of fragrance upon coming in my front door is the gentle nudge I need to remind me to breath deeply, stay calm and let the stress of the day slip away. I found these at Walmart. I chose each of these two fragrance mist products for different reasons.

Knott’s Berry Farm is already a fantastic theme park. Throw in a three-week food festival that features over 75 one-of-a-kind boysenberry-inspired dishes and now you have an AMAZING theme park! But it’s not all about the food, as there is also special entertainment, springtime decorations and historical influence. Knott’s Boysenberry History

Knott’s Berry Farm isn’t just a name, there is a history behind this unique theme park. It’s really located on the spot where the Knott family farm used to stand. The boysenberry is a cross between a loganberry, red raspberry and blackberry. It was named after its originator Rudolf Boysen, then successfully harvested and sold by the Knott family.

While my family and I have been going to Knott’s Berry Farm for many years, this was our first time visiting during the popular Boysenberry Festival. Fortunately for us, boysenberries are a favorite fruit and we were so excited to try all the delicious foods during this special event! For 24 days in 2018, this celebration of all things boysenberry is taking place at Knott’s, starting March 16th and running through April  8th, 2018.

My family and I were hosted as a guest at the Knott’s Berry Farm Boysenberry Festival. We received complimentary park admission and tasting cards. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Tasting Card

There are over 75 boysenberry foods available during the festival. This includes cotton candy, Jelly Belly and the 8 popular choices available on the tasting card. This tasting card costs $30 and you are able to mix and match between the eight options. You can also purchase the items à la carte but you’ll for sure get a better value with the card.

These are the foods available on the tasting card (we tried them all, except for the hummus – somehow we missed that stand!) Flip the tasting card over and there is a numbered map that shows where each stand is located. Most are in the same area. You’ll simply snap off one tab and present it when ordering at each stand.

Boysenberry Festival Food

Boysenberry Cheese Quesadilla – A boysenberry flour tortilla is filled with cotija and mozzarella cheese. It comes with sides of boysenberry salsa and sour cream. The salsa has a little kick (not joking, we licked it clean, it was delicious!) I give this a Knott’s Blue Ribbon as my favorite dish!

Boysenberry Sausage on a Bun – A savory sausage in a freshly baked bun. Add your own toppings (boysenberry ketchup, mustard and relish). Unfortunately they had run out of the boysenberry ketchup but it was still very tasty with the mustard! This is a great value, it’s quite filling. This was my eldest son’s favorite item.

Boysenberry Elote –  This popular Mexican street corn is grilled, then rubbed with a coating of boysenberry butter and boysenberry mayonnaise. It’s then rolled in parmesan cheese, wow! You can sprinkle on your own lemon pepper or cayanne. The boysenberry flavor is pretty light. This one gets a little sloppy!

How Do You Meet Relationship Goals When You’re Exhausted?

My husband has been a zombie for the last few months. Aside from working six days a week, it’s always at least 10 hours, sometimes 12 hours each day. He literally stumbles home after being on his feet all day, showers, eats dinner and then falls asleep.

“All I want to do is relax and watch a movie”. He says this literally every single day. How often does it happen? Sadly, I can’t remember the last time he made it through more than 10 minutes of any television without dozing off. Most nights he’s in bed before our children, around 7:30 pm. He’s back up at 3:00 am to do it all again the following day.

My husband is finishing up his final semester of school. This year he’s doing his course online, which means that his one day off usually includes catching up on homework. Added onto this, I also started night school twice a week. I get dinner done before he gets home but he’s still in charge of facilitating clean up, baths and bedtime for our four kids. Once my husband called me when I was at school and begged me to come home (I did). He was having an anxiety attack with the mental and physical exhaustion.

We have four children, two that are teens and two that are younger (including a toddler). Thank goodness for the help of the older two. Our only free family time together is Sunday. My husband usually like to check a few things off the to-do list that day, since it’s the only time he has. We also spend Sunday at church, meal planning for the week, doing household things, and maybe a small family activity, like a walk or the park.

How can you get deeper connection in the relationships with your spouse and children if you're always mentally and physically exhausted? I offer 10 tips with real ideas for busy people.

Our last family outing, a Christmas morning hike.

#RelationshipGoals

There are some great ideas out there for growing closer to your spouse. However not many of these relationship goals are relate-able for those of us with tight schedules, small kids or budgets. These are the #RelationshipGoals that probably seem unattainable to most.

  • “Read a relationship book together” – yeah, no time for reading together (I think if I started reading aloud, my husband would be snoring in 2.2 seconds!)
  • “Have regular date nights” – that includes not only the cost of an evening out but also a babysitter (and time we don’t have!) I can’t remember the last date night with just the two of us (that wasn’t a work party).
  • “Have meaningful conversations” – that sounds exhausting! At this point, I’m good if I get the chance to even tell my husband that the toilet clogged or to buy cheese at the grocery.

How can you get deeper connection in the relationships with your spouse and children if you're always mentally and physically exhausted? I offer 10 tips with real ideas for busy people.

Making Time for Deeper Relationships

So how in the heck do you create a deep emotional connection as partners when time is so limited? Can you possibly squeeze in “quality time” every day? How are you ever going to hit those marriage goals when you don’t even have the energy for a two-minute conversation? I have a few ideas on how to foster deep relationship even on limited time and energy.

And lest you think these tips are only for married couples, think about them in terms of your children as well. If you find yourself mentally and physically exhausted to the point where you feel the connection slipping with you kids, try these with your children as well.

1. Find Time Wherever, Whenever

I know that my time to talk to my husband one-on-one is very limited. If there’s something we need to discuss, it can be hard to do that when there are kids around. We try to squeeze in the time for talk whenever we can. My husband will often call me when he’s on his way home from work and talk over the Bluetooth. When he jumps in the shower, I’ll stand in the bathroom and we’ll chat. After dinner is cleaned up, we’ll often head out with the baby in her stroller for a walk. This gives us about 30 minutes of chatting while we get exercise. Where can you grab a few minutes of talking time with your partner?

2. Know When to Share (and When to Wait)

There are things that I need to talk to my husband about. Upcoming business trips, possible family vacation plans, something I’d like to buy for the house. These aren’t quick conversations. I haven’t talked to him about them yet because the timing just hasn’t been right. When my husband is exhausted, pouncing on him with big news as soon as he walks in the door isn’t going to go over very well! Knowing when to speak and when to wait is golden.

3. Showing Appreciation

Everyone wants to feel appreciated. When you’re run down, it’s too easy to get down on yourself. It’s basic but “thank you” goes a long way.  And if you can’t be there in person to deliver it, leave little messages. I put a Post-It note message on my husband’s phone at least once a week. I write it at night and it’s there in the morning before he leave for work.

4. Expressions of Affection

Physical intimacy isn’t always going to happen exactly when you want it to. However without intimacy and affection, your spouse may feel more like a roommate. Small gestures of touching, like a hug when preparing dinner, a foot massage while chatting about your day or a back rub before bed can really foster that connection. When I crawl into bed at night I’ll place my hand on my husband’s chest and say a prayer over him as he sleeps. He might not be awake for the affection, but it’s still meaningful to me.

5. Plan Ahead

Okay, so right now you’re time is tight and your relationship might be feeling equally tense. Is there a time in the future where you foresee a break in the craziness? Make a plan for the future, when things slow down. Maybe you’ll plan a weekend getaway, a family vacation or even just a day trip together. Perhaps your plan is even larger, like buying a new house or making a move out of state. Planning ahead and talking about it keeps your relationship moving forward towards something.

We went to Europe many years ago and it’s in the plans for our 10th wedding anniversary to make another big trip!

6. A Kind Gesture

If you’ve been together for any significant amount of time, you know what makes each other excited. My husband loves to have homemade cookies in his lunch. So if I bake them in the evening after he’s gone to bed, it really does make his day. What small gesture could you do out of the blue that would make your mate happy?

7. Switch Off the Attitude

I’ll confess that when I’m overloaded with stress, I tend to blow up on those around me. My husband is the same, unfortunately, letting the anxiety of the day spent at work flow over into our home life. Before my husband even gets home, I have been really focusing on my attitude and words. I don’t want the little time we spend together to be filled with arguing or upsets.

8. Be Present in Each Other’s Company

Unpopular opinion, but sitting in the same room while you’re both browsing your phones is not going to build your relationship! Put your phone on the charger and use the time you would have spent watching videos on Facebook to chat with your partner instead.

9. Pray for Each Other

Even when we’re not together, I am thinking about my husband while he’s at work. I pray that he’s safe, that he’s having a good day, that he’s healthy, whatever comes into my head and heart at the time. And each night before I fall asleep I place my hand on his back or chest and whisper prayers over him as he sleeps.

10. Remind Yourself That This is Only a Season

Big breath, “This too shall pass”. Hopefully the tight time constrictions currently in your relationship are only going to last a short amount of time before you’re given a breather. Focus on the future and what you’ll do with growing your partnership when you have more time and energy to invest.

Complete Guide to Everything Scary for Kids at Disneyland

Disneyland is called the “Happiest Place on Earth”. However that doesn’t mean it’s all happy, all the time. In fact, there are some rides, shows and attractions that might be downright scary for little (and not so little!) kids. If you have some concerns with your kids and the possibly scary things at Disneyland, keep reading. I’ve outlined the rides, shows and attractions that might be too scary for kids at Disneyland. I’ve made additional suggestions on what rides to try instead. I also have ideas on easing fears with your kids inside the Parks.

Things that Are Scary for Kids at Disneyland

There is so much to see, do and experience at the Disneyland Resort. For newbies at the Parks, you might not be aware of what things may scare kids. Some are easy to detect from the outside of the attraction (Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain). Other things may seem innocent enough and still have frightening elements. But, what are the scariest rides at Disneyland? That’s going to vary for each kid! Of course, only you know your children and how far to push things when it comes to trying new experiences. For more advice about encouraging kids, keep reading for my tested tips.

Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree is faster than it looks.

Disneyland Dark Rides

Dark rides are exactly what they sound like. These are indoor rides with the lights off. They are generally slow moving and the vehicle you ride in moves through different rooms and scenes. While some “dark rides” are bright and have a lighthearted theme, others might be frightening (or have certain scary scenes).

These are dark rides with scarier elements:

  • Haunted Mansion
  • Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride
  • Snow White’s Scary Adventures
  • Pinocchio’s Daring Journey

Dark Rides – Start with These:

  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh – It’s a dark ride that’s brightly lit and has a sweet theme. It’s the perfect first dark ride for Disneyland with toddlers.
  • Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters – wield a laser to aim at targets throughout the ride. Kids who don’t like the dark will be so enthralled with shooting the targets they probably won’t even notice how dark it is.
  • Alice in Wonderland – dark inside, but still lots of bright and whimsical moments. There is also a break mid-ride that takes your caterpillar vehicle outside for a ride on the leaves.

Interestingly, the Haunted Mansion Holiday during Halloween is LESS scary than the usual Haunted Mansion!

Attractions That Have Potentially Scary Moments

Disneyland Railroad – For the most part the Disneyland Railroad is all outdoors, with an overview of the Park. There is one section that you may want to avoid if you have a skittish kid. The section of the train that leaves from Tomorrowland Station takes you through a dark diorama. This is the Grand Canyon and Primeval World – Land of the Dinosaurs. It’s a very realistic scene that lasts about 5 minutes but includes large dinosaurs, dramatic music and an erupting volcano.

The Little Mermaid – Ariel’s Undersea Adventure – most of the ride is bright and fun, with cheerful music. There is a section where you’ll go “under water” and your clam shell vehicle gently tips backwards. This slight movement made my toddler daughter very nervous. There is also a dark section with Ursula the sea witch.

Soarin’ Around the World –  My son was very nervous to ride this after hearing that he’d be “flying”! Kids might be worried about the initial lift off which takes you off your feet. You will be safely buckled in and once lifted, there is minimal movement. Your ride vehicle will rock back and forth gently, coordinated with the film you’re watching. You may not even notice that you’re moving once the film begins. Have your kids pay attention to the pre-boarding video which shows exactly what happens during the lift off.

Scary Moments – Start With This:

Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room – While the majority of this attraction is sweet, with fun songs there is a small dramatic section at the end. See how your child reacts to the surprise change in mood (loud drumming and a thunder storm).

Grizzly River Rapids – steep drops and you will get drenched!

Disneyland Rides with Drops

Exactly how big is that drop on Splash Mountain? It’s a steep 52.5′ from top to splash down! The drop inside Pirates of the Caribbean on the other hand is a shorter 14′ but it’s in solid darkness. The drops on Guardians of the Galaxy can’t be predicted. Each ride varies and there are multiple drops both big and not-as-big.

  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Splash Mountain
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout!
  • Grizzly River Rapids

Rides with Drops – Start With These:

Dumbo the Flying Elephant – Yeah, this might look like a “baby ride” but for kids who don’t like the feeling of drops, this mild ride is a perfect place to start. Plus they can control the dips themselves.

Jumpin’ Jellyfish – This one is all up and down, but it’s outside where you can get a good vantage point of the Park. Most kids like this tummy-tickler!

The unpredictable drops are sure to be a fright for most kids.

Disneyland Thrill Rides

  • Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  • Matterhorn Bobsleds
  • Space Mountain
  • Indiana Jones Adventure :Temple of the Forbidden Eye
  • Goofy’s Sky School

Thrill Rides – Start with These:

Gadget’s Go Coaster – If you think your little one is ready for their first coaster, I recommend starting with Gadget’s Go Coaster in Toontown. It’s super-short (one minute long), has just a few tummy tickling dips and max speed of 22 mph.

Radiator Springs Racers – This hybrid dark ride and roller coaster has a cool indoor/outdoor effect. Maybe because you’re sitting inside of a low sports car vehicle, my young ones weren’t scared of the roller coaster section. Plus you’re racing against the car that’s on the other track, so the competition element might encourage your kids to want to go faster!

Radiator Springs Racers is a high speed race that most kids will love.

Potentially Scary Rides That Spin

If your kid doesn’t like the feeling of being out of control, these spinning rides may be frightening. Note that the Mad Tea Party and Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin can be controlled slightly, so spinning can be minimized. Kids can also control the up and down movement on the Astro Orbitor.

  • Mad Tea Party
  • Astro Orbitor
  • Golden Zephyr
  • Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree
  • Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin

Rides That Spin – Start With These!

  • King Arthur Carrousel
  • Flik’s Flyers
  • Luigi’s Rollickin’ Roadsters

Flik’s Flyers in “bug’s land” is a great first spinning ride.

A Ride With Height

Mickey’s Fun Wheel – I’m not a fan of heights and the Ferris wheel is top of my list of scary rides! However these gondolas are fully enclosed and you can choose the swinging or non-swinging version.

Ride With Height – Start With This!

Silly Symphony Swings – This ride smoothly combines height, spinning, drops and lift. Consider the tandem chair that seats you right next to your child so you can hold hands or comfort them if they’re nervous.

3-D Disneyland Ride

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue – This indoor 3-D ride simulator puts you right into the action of a Star Wars feature. This can be incredibly intense with loud noises and the feeling of flying (and crashing!)

3-D Ride – Start With This:

Toy Story Midway Mania – While you’ll be experiencing 3-D this interactive ride is also a competitive game where you shoot at the screen simulator to score points. There is plenty of spinning and 3-D elements but it’s all done in a fun and playful atmosphere.

Shows That Are Scary for Kids at Disneyland

It’s Tough to a Be a Bug! – I’ll admit it, I’ve never made it through this entire show with my eyes open. It take a tough kid to make it through this 4D live show that’s all about creepy crawlies! First off, it’s really loud. Second, it’s about bugs. And third, it features elements that are designed to scare you, like squirts of water in your face, clouds of fog, and the feeling that bugs are running underneath you.

Fantasmic! – It’s a nighttime show of good versus evil, which means lots of villain appearances and a huge fire-breathing dragon. It’s an impressive show with dramatic music and effects, which means it might be too intense from some kids.

Jedi Training – Trials of the Temple- Even kids who are familiar with the Star Wars franchise might still have a fingernail-biting moment when Darth Vader and Kylo Ren appear in person.

Shows Without Scary Elements:

  • Disney Junior Dance Party!
  • Mickey and the Magical Map
  • World of Color
  • Paint the Night
  • Frozen Live at the Hyperion
